Fuji Upper King: King Street’s Answer to Good Sushi

King Street needs more quality sushi options. There’s O-Ku, which is good, but that’s about it. There is not a lot of variety when it comes to sushi on King Street. I was happy to see earlier this a year, a “Coming Soon” sign for Fuji Upper King. I love the area of Upper King near the Hyatt House because of the ample parking that the Hyatt House garage offers. (Yes, I base much of my dinner plans and happy hour plans on parking!)

I stopped into Fuji Upper King for the first time a week or so after they first opened. It was early in the fall and football season had just started. How do I remember that? Because I recall ordering the Gamecock roll that Friday night in anticipation for the USC vs UGA game the next day. (Funny how I can frame everything around sports!) The roll was delicious! I knew I had to go back.

I recently had the opportunity again to stop in and sample the menu. It was a chilly, fall night. The perfect night for a glass of red wine and some sushi. We started with a variety of appetizers included some crispy, crunchy wontons and a deliciously spicy steak tartare. I love steak tartare and they hit it out the park with this one. Next, we enjoyed some miso and a salad. The miso was perfect for the chilly fall night. Next, we sampled some of the hibachi, which was very fresh and delicious. Then we got to enjoy an array of sashimi and sample many of their rolls.

All the rolls were delicious, picking just one favorite was difficult! They weren’t overdone to where you were eating an Americanized version of sushi, as other joints do. They were deliciously simple!

We finished up enjoying some mochi and checking out the rooftop of the restaurant. I am eager to go back (when the weather warms up) and enjoy sushi and drinks on the roof. The space is huge and offers great views of King Street.

I was happy to learn, too, that Fuji has specials every night of the week, including a service industry night, half off bottles of wine on Wednesday, and a night where they offer five rolls for $60. They also offer daily happy hour specials on both booze and food. Some of their sushi rolls are also included in their happy hour special, which is awesome!

Fuji is definitely the answer to Upper King’s sushi woes! The food is delicious, the service is amazing, and there’s even an added bonus of a rooftop with a bar! Sushi, booze, and rooftops are all three of my favorite things, so you can count me in as a soon-to-be regular at Fuji Upper King this!
