Mixson is proud to announce that Thurston Southern will advise on the culinary programs at Básico, Mixson Market and Mixson Bath and Racquet Club. Led by chef Nathan Thurston, Thurston Southern will consult on menus, operations and event catering to ensure that the culinary program continues to run efficiently and provide the highest quality food and drink.

“Chef Thurston’s vast experience and fresh perspective will further strengthen our culinary program and I look forward to our partnership,” says Bryan Lewis, owner-operator Básico, Mixson Market and Mixson Bath & Racquet Club.

Most recently serving as executive chef at Charleston’s Stars Grill Room, Thurston brings almost 20 years of culinary experience to his new catering and consulting business. Among his other professional experiences, Thurston served as executive chef of The Ocean Room at the five star and five diamond rated Sanctuary Hotel on Kiawah Island Golf Resort, where he also oversaw the resort’s other culinary facets, including Jasmine Porch, Loggerhead Grill and Kiawah Island’s banquet operations.

Básico offers a modern take on a traditional taqueria, emphasizing local, fresh ingredients and seasonal menu items. Located in the historic Park Circle district between Mixson Market and Mixson Bath & Racquet Club, this gourmet taqueria lives by Mixson’s sustainable values, featuring a small, ever-changing, menu line-up in which the chef utilizes the entire animal, produces nearly everything in-house and grows some of her own vegetables just outside of the restaurant. The beverage component offers craft beers, wines, Mezcal flights, Cava flights and creative cocktails that complement the food. The kitchen services a full catering facility with rental space for events. For more information, visit here.

Mixson Market, located in Park Circle, is a purveyor of quality provisions from the Lowcountry and beyond. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner selections, Mixson Market also features gourmet coffee, prepared meals to go, grocery items, a growler station for craft beers and select retail products that range from pet supplies to vintage cookbooks and stemware. The pantry is stocked with the best Lowcountry items including Callie’s Biscuits, Caw Caw Creek pork products, produce from GrowFood Carolina, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, Sweet Grass Dairy cheeses and Sweeteeth Chocolates. Indoor and outdoor seating is available. For more information, visit here.

Mixson Bath & Racquet Club is a swim and social club with a full-service restaurant, a wellness center featuring yoga and personal training, badminton and bocce courts, and event spaces. Membership is available to Mixson residents, as well as the larger Charleston community. Designed by Lake Flato, a nationally renowned architectural firm with a reputation for sustainable design, brought to life with the help of the local firm McMillan Pazdan Smith, and decorated by Dominick Coyne, the family-friendly Club features a 3,200 square-foot heated, saltwater pool, changing facilities with showers and lockers, a “kiddie car-wash,” event spaces and private cabanas available for daily rental or event use.
