I grabbed the umbrella just in case. Fishburne Street was indeed flooded. Two little boys holding hands with their mom crossed the road ahead of us. She gently chided. "Walk around the mud puddle boys." The same exact second she voiced her instruction, the boys' feet left the ground and splashed mom's capri clad legs. It was clearly a tie. Mom laughed and said "You got me." Isn't that the Joe? Play anyway.
Ok, let's find our seats, and then go for some brew and chew. The smells, oh,the smells! Green damp grass, salty marsh, plough mud, beer, popcorn, peanuts, pretzels, hot dogs.
The tarps were rolled off the field, and the preparations for pre-game festivites began. The City of Charleston's annual picnic was winding down at The Joe, with Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. announcing that Gary Smith and Gary Smalls were the Employees of the Year." They also threw out first pitches!
Food criers milled about. Tony the Peanut Man performed his song and happy clap dance in front of us. Mascot's Charlie and Chelsea wowed and wooed the crowd as well as goofed off infield with the visiting SweetRight Brothers. The sun slipped behind the Joe and over the marsh. The night breeze felt great and the field was gorgeous. The crowd really gets into our RiverDogs team. The Asheville tourist pulled off a win.
But really, there isn't a bad night at the Joe is there? I had a blast watching the crowd as well! Check out the pics. Pack up the family and head for a night of fun!
