First off, given the occasion, we'd like to say what we're thankful for here at Grit...

... We live in one bad ass town—and it particularly shines during the holiday season. So we've rounded up our five fave holiday happenings. Read on for our list, but take note: one's going down this weekend!

November 30

>> Shop Local Saturday

Shall we head out to get our holiday goods on Black Friday with crowds of thousands, or wait till Shop Local Saturday? Hmmm... That's a tough one...

Wait, no... It's absolutely not. Let's all sleep in Friday morning, then head out to support the 40+ local businesses taking part in Shop Local Saturday, which benefits Lowcountry Local First—the Charleston org that works to building a strong local economy. Find the full list of participating businesses here.

Getting the chance to dress up like a reindeer, an elf, or Santa himself and then run about the Peninsula? Why not? Spread holiday cheer, get a workout, then drink some Bloody Marys—there's an after-party at Southend Brewery. Register here; race begins at 9 a.m. from the Southend Brewery

>> Parade of Boats

Whether you're actually in a boat or just watching from shore, this parade of twinkling vessels is a seasonal must. Check them out as they float down the Cooper River, through the Charleston Harbor, and into the Ashley from the USS Yorktown, Waterfront Park, or the Battery, and stick around for the end-of-evening firework show. Parade begins along Mt. Pleasant at 5:30 p.m., peninsula viewing starts at 6:30.

Through December 31

>> Holiday Festival of Lights

Wrangle the fam, hop in the car, and head to James Island County Park to soak up the season. Aside from viewing the three-mile display of lights (including twinkling version of Nessie the Loch Ness monster, you roast marshmallows, build gingerbread houses, take train rides, hang out in Santa's Villiage, and munch on Blitzen’s Burgers. Daily starting at dusk; $12 per car

Through January 10

5th Annual Holiday Pub Crawl

Alright, this is what we call drinking for a good cause. A portion of the proceeds from this boozy tour benefit MUSC Children’s Hospital and Toys for Tots. So there's that. And there's also beer, and a whirl around some of our city's historic taverns. Now, we can't promise this thing won't feel touristy—we don't know, we've never been—but it's not a bad idea. Settle in a few pubs, settle into a few more pubs, and drink your day away? What could possibly go wrong? Daily tours at 4 and 7 p.m. $30 per adult
