Every year, Yelp throws one giant (and free) party that’s open to anyone in the community with a Yelp account. They’re always really fun events, with free food, drink, music, photobooths, entertainment, etc.

Every year has a different theme, and this year’s theme is based on Comic Con (hence the YelpCon moniker), encouraging people to dress up as characters from their favorite fandoms, like Marvel, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, etc. And have I mentioned that the event is totally free?!

This year’s event is taking place on October 14th from 7 – 10 pm at Sterling Hall at the Hyatt Place Downtown Charleston. Doors open promptly at 7, but every year there’s usually a line of folks waiting to get in before the event starts.

Here’s what you can expect at this year’s event:

  1. Costume contest

Since the event is right before Halloween and Comic Con themed, you can expect to see a lot of really creative costumes. There will be prizes given for best costume, best couple's costume, best group costume, and most creative, so get those creative juices a-flowin’.

  1. Silent disco

The idea of a silent disco is simple, a little strange, and a lot of fun (like most good things in life).  Holy City Events will be hosting the silent disco, and having disco’d with them at The Alley’s Studio 300 party in the past, I can pretty much guarantee that this is going to rock.

  1. Free food

Some of your favorite restaurants in Charleston will be present passing out samples of their food for you to enjoy. Think places like Hank’s Seafood, Poke Tea House, Mellow Mushroom, and Rebel Taqueria, to name a few.

  1. Free drinks

There will be local and national brands serving up cocktails and tastes of their different liquors and beers. Because the only thing better than booze, is free booze.

  1. Wine-tasting classes

Wendy from Cellar Experience will be leading small groups of people through mini wine tasting classes throughout the night. Plan to sign up as soon as you arrive, because classes will fill up!

  1. Lots of photos

If there aren’t photos to post on Instagram, did it really happen? Stop by the photobooth to take silly photos with props (or not) or be on the lookout for the event photographers capturing all the fun throughout the night.

  1. Donations to charity

YelpCon isn’t just fun and games, it’s also for a good cause! Yelp has partnered with We Are Family, a local charity that provides support, resources, and leadership development opportunities to LGBTQI and straight ally youth in the Lowcountry. Bring some cash dollars to donate to this awesome cause!

  1. Samples of local products

Local artisans will also be on site to let you try their wares! Some of the vendors include Pure Fluff Co., Roots Hummus, Cindy’s Twisted-Sicles, King of Pops, and more.

  1. No kids

The event is purely 21 and up, so if you’re not of legal drinking age, don’t expect to get in, even with a parent or guardian. No one under 21 will be allowed in, so be sure you get a babysitter now!

Check out photos from past events and be sure to RSVP for YelpCon ASAP in order to secure a spot on the guest list before it sells out!
