Twenty years ago, two Charlotte businessmen placed a bet at Christmas time. Their mission? Simply to see who could raise the most money to buy bicycles for underprivileged children and have a little fun while doing it. They raised money for 17 bikes that year, and that mission is still going strong today.

In 2010, local couple Ken and Hope Caldwell decided to bring the mission to Charleston. The Spokes Group, with branches in Charleston, Charlotte, and the Triangle region of North Carolina, has given away tens of thousands of bikes to children over the last few years.

On December 14, the local branch is putting on the second annual “Bikes, Brews and BBQ” event at Grow Food Carolina. The event is only $20, and proceeds go towards the Spokes Group’s bike fund for local children. So far this year, the Spokes Group Charleston has already raised money for and purchased 500 bikes, which will be distributed on December 18.
