Hey there, friends! My name is Charlotte, and I am a May 2013 graduate of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, where I double majored in business and communication. I am a total foodie, obsessed with watching the Food Network, browsing food blogs, exploring new restaurants, and experimenting with whatever unique recipes I can get my hands on. While my dream of being the next Food Network star ventures a bit from reality, cooking for family and friends appears to be the next best thing. I have recently moved to Charleston, SC (the city of my dreams) to begin work at a PR agency dealing primarily with the food and travel industries! I am eager to learn as much as I can as I begin this next chapter of my life. Recipes that are quick and involve simple, affordable ingredients are what I am all about. But most importantly, they have to be fricken delicious. While most college kids fear my favorite hobby, I have gathered a collection of recipes that even the least experienced cook can master. I challenge you to try the food on this blog, and guarantee you there will be no leftovers.
My blog, Salt and Preppy
It's easy to read the stats and go on living our daily lives, to ignore the harsh truth and become numb to the realities surrounding us in our own backyard. Right now:
1 in 6 Americans face hunger.
49 million Americans, including 16.2 million children, don’t know when they will get their next meal.
21.9 percent of South Carolinians reported being unable to afford food last year
You hear it all the time: you CAN make a difference. But do we really believe in this idea? The other day as I was sitting down to an Instagram-worthy dinner (which happens quite often for me as a foodie who loves to eat out and explore the Charleston restaurant scene), it hit me—how lucky am I? How lucky am I to not only never have to worry about where my next meal will come from, but to also have the financial ability to treat myself to meals out at restaurants.
I truly believe those who are blessed are called to bless others, and with blessings come responsibilities. I also believe that our life passions and inherit skills can and should be used to benefit others. My obsession with cooking and baking and all things culinary I am learning to view in a new light. I began asking myself this question: how can I turn a hobby into something greater? While showing up at my office and neighbors' houses with weekly sweets is all well and good, how great would it be to FEED those who are truly desperate and in need?
I recently learned about this amazing nationwide event called Run10Feed10, a partnership between Women’s Health and an organization called The FEED Foundation aimed at solving the world’s most solvable problem: HUNGER. This fall, they are giving people everywhere the opportunity to participate in a 10K run, with each registration immediately providing 10 meals for the hungry in our own specific cities. My friend and I are beyond pumped to host the Run10Feed10 event in Charleston and invite people of all ages to join our team, “LOWCOUNTRY FEET FOR FEED.”
WHEN: Sunday, November 9 from 12-2 p.m. Meet afterwards at FUEL!
WHERE: Beginning at Brittlebank Park, with our 10k route planned around the Battery + White Point Gardens!
WHO: All ages welcome
COST: $30 (which provides 10 meals for the hungry in Charleston)
The thought of running a 10k terrify you? Have no fear- walking is welcome! Truth be told, I haven’t even run a 5K before and plan to take my sweet time if need be. Come out for a gorgeous day spent downtown making new friends and strides towards ending Hunger in the Chuck!
Can’t make the event but still want to help? Help us reach our $1,000 fundraising goal by donating to our page!
