Charleston's golden season—it's officially here! To celebrate, we've put together a Grit guide to summer in the Holy City. Read on for a recap: including what to do, what not to do, what to wear, what to grill, what beer to drink, shoddy advice for avoiding shark attacks, and much more. Have a great Memorial Day weekend all, and cheers to summer!
DO stay on the sand until sundown, or a little past. You can take back the beach, and let your salty, quiet fatigue set in. If you miss day's end, you miss half the fun.
DON'T be one of those girls. You know the ones: the ones in ill-fitting bikinis hanging off the end of the a boat, ten seconds from some sort of ill-advised grind to "Supersonic" by J.J. Fad that's all wrong, ten minutes from doing the same sans bikini top, and about ten hours from waking up with a third-degree sunburn, a splitting headache, and big 'roid of regret, likely in the form of an overly tanned, thick-necked dude named Chad. Who, interestingly enough, was the one shouting for you to remove your top in the first place. This isn't Jersey Shore, and if we can help it, let's leave Myrtle Manor to the north of us.

5. Five Reasons Why Charleston's THE Best Summer Town in America
Reason #1b) WE'RE NOT "THE SHORE." Ever been to some of those Northern beaches, where people line up like pack animals, wall-to-wall along the sand, stepping into each others’ bologna sandwiches and blending sweet, sweaty aromas of sunscreen and wet body hair? By the way, these beaches are also where you'll find people arriving fully dressed on a 110-degree day to set up a picnic with their family, as if any of this is normal. It's not.
