Take a Stroll in Someone Else's Shoes

John F. Abess

As a psychiatrist, it is my honor and privilege to have the opportunity to practice empathy daily. In the setting of a psychiatric consultative sessions, people share their most revealing secrets, fears, and hopes. It is a very humbling experience and makes me appreciate the fact that all of us suffer in some fashion or another. This suffering and how we help each other through the suffering is what binds us together in our community and in our humanity.

If you need a reminder of how important empathy is—check out this video, created by the highly respected Cleveland Clinic. The theme of the video is empathy. And the takeaway? That our society would certainly be gentler and kinder if more of us made the effort to look at life as it is experienced by others.
