Alexander Botwin (sometimes known as Alex B, but best known as beat master Paper Diamond) has taken the electronic music scene by storm in just a few short years. Since signing with the popular Pretty Lights Music Label in 2010, Paper Diamond has traveled a long way. Originating in the music hub of Boulder, Colorado, Alex began his pursuits as the bassist for Pnuma Trio in 2004, but eventually made the decision to break away to pursue his career in production. Well, it’s safe to say that was a smart move! He has played at countless live venues and festivals, such as Coachella, Electric Forest, and Lollapalooza. Botwin is also head of Elm and Oak, a record label/clothing line/high-end design shop in Boulder. (He's a multifaceted dude.)

When he came to the Charleston Music Farm last Saturday night, he further solidified his reputation for throwing it down. The beat freaks were salivating after his first song. Paper Diamond made the crowd bounce with his awesome light show and bass drops, creating the ultimate music experience for those who love getting down to some solid EDM. Utilizing Ableton, a common music software that many popular artists use, Alex B’s live performance is impressive because of his concentration and harmony with his technology. Using an iPad uploaded with Touch OSC or a laptop, he is one of many who are using the development of technology to their advantage and literally forming careers around it. One can't deny that this guy loves what he does and has much more music in store.

At the show, he played some original stuff as well as remixes, which was a great balance to keep the crowd constantly entertained and up to speed. Some songs came off his very successful first 8-song EP, Levitate, which he produced in 2011. Released in 2013, his highly anticipated second album, Paragon, showcases his artistic development and soulful swagger. My favorite banger of the night was a remix of "Wildfire" by SBTRKT featuring Little Dragon, a song that’s great to get any party started. The link is above, and you wont regret pressing play! Overall, I would definitely recommend seeing Paper Diamond live for the trifecta of killer lights, contagious dancing, and sheer artistic focus.
