"Today is one of the saddest days in my 20 plus years of being in the Dorchester County Coroner's Office... one of the worst deaths I have ever handled." —Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet

Those are the coroner's comments following the death of two-month old Aiden Lee McGrew, who died this past week from an attack (including dismemberment) by the family's retriever mix. There are conversations lighting up all over about this, and yet I can't figure out what to say. Certainly not about the parents—there's all sorts of chatter about how the dad could have slept through an attack like that, that it seems fishy this type of dog would do that. I have no idea. I assume someone's getting to the bottom of it. I do know that parents are responsible for what happens to their kids, and live with what happens on their watch. Most parents aren't fuzzy on that. We'll see how Aiden's are charged and make up our own minds about whether it feels like it fits.

I did notice there's a few dog lovers rallying with comments here and there to save the dog. I wonder: are you going to adopt the animal? Are you going to be responsible for keeping it away from children (and for that matter, adults) for the next 10 years? That's a tall order. No? Because without a taker here, we either have a dog locked up through its golden years or a dog put down. There isn't a parole hearing in its future, nor a rehabilitation facility... The save-the-dog chorus should realize what they're asking for. And I'd add that most dogs wouldn't do this, and the ones that would are often provoked or protecting someone. This was a two-month old. What's the excuse there? I'm thinking this dog's just one bad apple.
