Following a two-week hiatus, Grit Picks is back doing its best to distract you from the 9-to-5. We blame our absence on a sugary-induced, sweet-toothed hangover from too much candy at Halloween. You can't trust us not to eat what's left from a lower-than-expected turnout of trick-or-treaters, can you? We digress. But, here we are ready to help you forget about work and focus on the weekend with three solid choices for passing the time.
Thirty Dancing Gala
What: Camp Happy Days 30th Anniversary Gala
When: Friday, November 22, 7 pm
Description: Dance the night away like it's 1963 at Memminger Auditorium. Camp Happy Days is hosting its Thirty Dancing Gala celebrating 30 years of the Cabooty Party. Former camper/current volunteer and pediatric cancer survivor, Allan “Cabooty” Cabading, hosted a small house party then to raise money for Camp Happy Days. The party and support for this organization has outgrown the small house and is set to take over The Memminger for a night of Dirty Dancing-themed fun. In addition to fun, expect good food, signature beverages and a live and silent auction to benefit the kids and families of Camp Happy Days. Last year, Camp Happy Days served 1,799 individuals affected by pediatric cancer from all over South Carolina with 14 programs, including their flagship week-long, sleep-away camp where 260 kids got to be…kids. Tickets available here. What do you say? Sounds to us like a solid plan to have... wait for it... the time of your life.
Burpees and Brews
What: Burpees and Brews at Commonhouse Aleworks
When: Saturday, November 23, 10 am (recurring)
Description: Don't act like you don't need to work off Halloween candy. Besides, Turkey Day is next week followed in no short order by Christmas and New Years. (What?) So, since we've all come to terms with the fact that we're in the same holy crap boat, it's time to wrap our minds around an exercise routine immediately followed by beer. Luckily, for you, and us, Charleston Get Fit found our boat and is coming to the rescue with Burpees and Brews. All we have to do is show up Saturday morning at Commonhouse Aleworks prepared to sweat and leave the rest up to them. Once we finish, we'll reward our newfound fitness discipline with a pint of craft-brewed goodness. What's not to love? Ok, burpees. We don't love burpees but will do them in exchange for beer.
Mercury Rising
What: Queens perform the songs of Queen
When: Sunday, November 24, 5-9 pm at Tabbuli
Description: Trust us when we say you do not want to miss this. Turn your Sunday Funday on its head with a Freddie Mercury tribute to end all tributes — and all for a good cause, too. The fun begins at 5 pm with a showing and sing-along of Queen's iconic movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, and ends with a drag show. What could be better? Well, the fact that proceeds benefit Palmetto Community Care HIV & AIDS treatment makes it better. Turn the anniversary of Freddie Mercury's passing into an opportunity to save others. You're welcome. Tabbuli is located at 6 N. Market Street downtown. Look for us as well as our partners at Charleston Magazine who will be hosting the members of their Charleston Magazine Club there as one of the club's monthly events. Not to be missed, especially if you're a fan of Queen, helping people and having a good time.
