When life gets you down in Charleston, just follow the advice of Liza Minnelli’s iconic character Sally Bowles: “Life is a Cabaret, come to the Cabaret!”
More specifically for the Holy City, come out to Charleston’s Connections NiteClub (1377 Ashley River Rd.) this Saturday at 7 pm for a special cabaret performance—"Keep It Gay 2.0: A Fundraising Cabaret," a show that celebrates life, love, family, gender expression, and the entire journey of coming out to the world with bravery and success.
Music from Broadway productions past and present provide the backdrop to this story, a spectacular collaboration between local LGBTQ+ youth organization We Are Family and the College of Charleston's Center Stage Theatre.
The performance is a fundraising effort to support the growing services of We Are Family, which, in addition to other vital community projects, provides direct support and services to LGBTQ+ youth in need. The organization gives quarterly training for schools and professionals who work with youth, as well as youth group support, events, and leadership development opportunities.
Proceeds and ticket sales will go directly towards the goals of creating a drop-in shelter specifically for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness and an LGBTQ+ resource center, the first of its kind in the Lowcountry.
“We are so proud of the results; the cast is excited,” Topher Larkin, with We Are Family, explained. “This will be an incredible event with a beautiful story to be shared”.
A special reception and exclusive drag performances will immediately follow the show.
Tickets are still available for sale and can be purchased at the We Are Family Website: http://www.wearefamilycharleston.org/buy-tickets-for-keep-it-gay-a-musical-cabaret/
