Liquid Lipstick

I’ve always been a bit skeptical about liquid lipsticks. I never quite understood the concept of not using a lipliner! Clearly I’ve been stuck in my ways for awhile. After trying out tons of brands that are out there, I’ve been able to not only get on board the liquid lipstick train, I’ve figured out the most effective ways to use them.

Super matte, non-transferring lipsticks provide me with hours of wear, even through date nights and Charleston’s sticky humidity. Adding a basic, rosey liquid lipstick to your daily routine can cut down on re-application, as well as stay put even if it gets wet.

Through my endless trips to Sephora and Ulta, as well as scouring the Internet, two brands have stood out to me the most. The fiscally friendly, NYX Cosmetics soft matte lip creams, and the splurge, Dose of Colors liquid lipsticks.

NYX Cosmetics has proven itself to be not only friendly on my bank account, but creative and pigmented enough to be on the same level as any higher-end makeup brand. Everyone loves a good product haul from Ulta where you can walk out with 10 NYX products for under $30.

The soft matte lip creams can take some practice. The product is significantly sheerer compared to others, and requires at least 3 coats to get a solid opaque color. On the pro side, they are softer, less tacky feeling after drying, and realistically colored for those of you who are looking for a good place to start.

Prep your lips with a exfoliating scrub or give them a quick rub down with a toothbrush or disposable mascara wand. This will get rid of any dead or flaky skin on your lips and create a prime surface for your liquid lipstick to adhere to. Make sure to use a moisturizing lip balm after.

LIQUID LIPSTICK IS INCREDIBLY UNFORGIVING. It is the liquid eyeliner of lipstick. Don’t let it sense your fear!

Start with a small area and work your way around your lips, lightly filling-in and lining. They are fast drying and do not move once they are dry. Color inside the lines and you’ll be just fine.

Dose of Colors' densely pigmented lipsticks and fun colors have stolen my makeup junkie heart. The product is opaque after just one swipe and never requires re-application. They have managed to suffer through 8 hours of blow-drying, talking, and eating and drinking without budging. Their only downfall is the tacky sticky feeling they leave behind. Usually solved by a lip balm, it’s still something that just drives me nuts. But beauty is pain. And at a painful $18 a piece, I will just have to deal to get the gorgeous hues I want.

Here’s a side by side comparison of the two brands, NYX on the left and DOC on the right, only one swipe of each.

Liquid lipsticks have quickly become my go to every day lip. I have always said practice makes perfect when it comes to makeup. Didn’t get it right the first time? Well, wipe it off and start over!
