More than just a race, the Avondale 5K has become a community tradition with a meaningful purpose.
One of West Ashley's most anticipated community events is back. The 17th Annual Avondale 5K Run + Walk for Special Kids will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, bringing hundreds of runners, walkers, families and neighbors together in support of the Charles Webb Center, a local childcare center serving children with special needs and developmental disabilities.
More than just a race, the Avondale 5K has become a community tradition with a meaningful purpose. Last year's event welcomed more than 500 participants and raised nearly $50,000 for the Charles Webb Center. Organizers hope to make this year's event the biggest yet, with an ambitious fundraising goal of $75,000.
The race begins on Tall Oak Drive, adjacent to Triangle Char & Bar (828 Savannah Highway), and winds through the scenic Avondale neighborhood before connecting to West Ashley's bike path. Participants of all ages and abilities are encouraged to join, whether running, walking or rolling the course. Strollers and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
Following the race, participants are invited to celebrate at the popular After Race Party hosted by Triangle Char & Bar, featuring live music, food, beverages, awards and prize giveaways.
Every dollar raised stays local, directly benefiting the Charles Webb Center—the only DSS-licensed childcare center in South Carolina dedicated exclusively to serving children with special needs and developmental disabilities. Operated by the Disabilities Foundation of Charleston County, the Center provides critical educational and therapeutic services that help children reach their fullest potential while supporting local families.
Race participants will also compete for the honor of having their name engraved on the prestigious Stevie Award, named in memory of race founder Stephen Condon, whose vision continues to inspire the event nearly two decades later. Registration is now open. Community members can participate as runners, walkers, volunteers or sponsors.
