Ye Ole Fashioned, West Ashley – This place has been making hotdogs and serving ice cream since 1972. As they say on their website, they "overstuff everything." They’re generous with their scoops, too.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams – Sure, it’s an Ohio-based chain, but their ice cream is so delicious we can overlook that indiscretion. My favorite is the brown butter almond brittle.

Cirsea – With flavors like toasted black sesame and lychee (an Asian staple with light citrus notes), and some more traditional ones like maple pecan and vanilla bean, this ice cream is a hit! Pick up a pint of one of these at a local retailer or restaurant.

Park Circle Creamery - “A spoonful of smiles.” Need we say more?

Peace Pie – A newcomer to the area, Peace Pie offers amazing ice cream sandwiches with a twist. It's an ice cream sandwich with a layer of pie filling. yum!

Ben & Jerry’s – Sure, you can buy a pint at your local grocery store, but head into the Market St. shop for a fresh scoop.

Republic Ice Cream & Custard – Do you remember making homemade ice cream in the summers when you were young? This is exactly what this ice cream tastes like.

Paolo’s Gelato Italiano (sadly under construction!) – As an Atlanta native, I had to include this spot on the list even though it is currently closed for remodeling. It’s the best gelato in town and my favorite spot to stop after seeing a show at the Charleston Music Hall.

Crooked Crown – What happens when you combine a bar and a popsicle? Crooked Crown. Add a King of Pops treat to one of their signature cocktails to create the ultimate poptail.

Second Scoop

Heading out to the beach this summer? Check out these delectable dessert spots.

Island Joe’s – This outdoor café is located right by the main entrance to the beach. Stop by on your way into the ocean or back to the car for an ice-cold treat.

Beardcat’s Sweet Shop – After a long afternoon soaking up the sun, nothing beats a cool cone of ice cream. Stop in Beardcat’s for artisanal gelato made from locally sourced ingredients.

Vincent’s Drug Store – This old-school soda shop is conveniently located in Freshfields Village. It’s the perfect place to stop in for a milkshake or malt after a long drive out to Kiawah Island.
