Chucktown Gets A Sephora – Finally!

Chucktown Gets A Sephora – Finally!

Finally, King St Gets Makeup Giant

Normally, I am biased against any big chain stores coming onto King Street, where they can crowd out the local businesses.

But, I make an exception for Sephora.

“We have a Sephora back home in Michigan,” said Claire, 14, who was just visiting the King Street store. “I really like the highlight stuff and the contouring.”

If you’re new to Sephora, it’s the mega-makeup store that has brands you just can’t find at King Street’s upscale Cos Bar or even the hipper Blue Mercury. Brands like Makeup For Ever (try their Aqua Eyes waterproof eyeliner – tons of fun shades and it stays put) and special formulations like Tarte’s Rainforest of the Sea, which sounds like some organic smoothie, but actually has one of the lightest water-based foundations with sunscreen EVER.

Makeup artist Michael, 25, Charleston, was in the Sephora recently, showing his friend, Ryan, 24, Charleston, the Makeup Forever foundations. He told me he used to work at Sephora in Augusta, GA, and was thrilled when Charleston finally got its own Sephora.

“(Makeup Forever has) the best foundation in the world. It has a wide range of undertones,” Michael said. “I always send people here. You skin can breathe when you wear it.”

Charleston was overdue for a Sephora. Oh, we had the sad little mini-Sephora hunching in a corner of J.C. Penney in Northwoods Mall, but not a real Sephora, with its black-and-white striped walls and its endless displays of samples. For most big-city makeup divas, the assumption is that every city worth its mascara has a Sephora.

“I love makeup. I’m a beauty guru,” said Karson, 19, down from Columbia. “I had to come check it out. I’m very overwhelmed. There’s a lot of stuff here.”

It can be easy to get overwhelmed, but Sephora offers a system called Color IQ that can help narrow your choices. A special camera takes three shots of your skin and then Sephora’s system recommends makeup from just about every brand they sell that will be a good match, or at least close. My Color IQ was off by just a shade, but Evelyn from the makeover counter quickly corrected the shade to account for the yellow undertones in my skin that the Color IQ had misread.

The result? If you’re looking for a good match, it helps to narrow the choice down from the dazzling array of choices.
