Christening Etiquette

A Christening is a very important event, not just for the baby, but for the entire family. Whether you are a guest going to a Christening, or you are hosting one yourself, there are many things to consider. Oftentimes, entire families and many friends are coming together so while it is a celebration, it can be stressful to manage smoothly. Here are a few helpful tips to keep everything on track.

1) Consult key family members on the Christening date. It is nearly impossible to find a date that will please everyone, but you will want to make sure godparents and grandparents and make it.

2) If you are a guest, be sure to arrive early. Different denominations hold Christenings at different times. Some are during a traditional service while some are private and follow after a service.

3) When hosting a Christening, it is customary to invite guests to your home for cake and coffee. Be sure to include the minister or pastor who presided over the ceremony.

4) Some hosts opt to serve a full lunch as well, which is completely fine too. For this type of setting, I like to do a buffet of easy-to-pick-up items on my dining room table so guests can mingle while they eat.

5) Although etiquette dictates guests are not obligated to bring a present, many often still do. I like to have a little something for guests to take home with them as well for a thank you. These boxed cookies are totable treats. Of course, for any gift, be sure to write a thank you note in a prompt timeframe.
